How to Calculate Ad Impressions

Ad impressions represent how many times your ad is displayed. To estimate impressions from a budget, use this formula:

Impressions = (Budget ÷ CPM) × 1,000

For example, with a $5,000 budget and a $7.19 CPM (Facebook average), you would get approximately 695,410 impressions. That means your ad is shown nearly 700,000 times.

The cost per individual impression is simply CPM divided by 1,000. At a $7.19 CPM, each impression costs about $0.0072 — less than a penny. But those fractions add up fast at scale, which is why CPM optimization matters.

What Are Ad Impressions?

An ad impression is counted each time your ad is displayed on a screen. It does not mean someone clicked, engaged, or even consciously noticed it — only that it was rendered and potentially viewable.

CPM stands for "cost per mille" (mille = thousand in Latin). When a platform charges $7.00 CPM, you pay $7.00 for every 1,000 times your ad is shown. CPM is the standard pricing model for brand awareness and reach campaigns.

Impressions are the foundation of brand awareness advertising. Research shows that consumers need 7-13 touchpoints before making a purchase decision. Each impression is a touchpoint. The more relevant impressions you deliver to your target audience, the more familiar your brand becomes.

However, not all impressions are equal. An impression served to the wrong audience is wasted spend. Platforms like Facebook and Google optimize delivery based on targeting, but creative quality also matters — eye-catching ads naturally earn more attention per impression, making each one more valuable. When impressions plateau without results, it may be a sign of creative fatigue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good CPM for Facebook ads?
Average CPM for Facebook ads ranges from $5-$15 depending on your audience, industry, and time of year. Ecommerce brands typically see $8-$12 CPM. CPMs tend to spike during Q4 holiday season and drop in January.
How many impressions do I need?
The number of impressions depends on your goals and expected CTR. For brand awareness campaigns, aim for enough impressions to reach your target audience 3-5 times (frequency). For conversion campaigns, work backward from your target CPA using your expected CTR and conversion rate.
What is the difference between impressions and reach?
Impressions count the total number of times your ad was displayed, including repeat views by the same person. Reach counts the number of unique people who saw your ad. One person seeing your ad 3 times equals 3 impressions but 1 reach.
